Introducing “EU VALUES”, the newsletter
|
The EU-VALUES Network (EU Research and Education Network on Foreign policy issues: Values and Democracy) brings together 21 outstanding higher education institutions, to enhance a wider debate and reflection on the pivotal role of democratic values in the EU´s foreign policy. Our approach will be based on discussing openly how to promote democracy, rule of law, and human rights through foreign policy. We will consider which are the most convenient tools and the best approaches, aiming to enrich EU perspectives, but also to cross-fertilize with many other experiences and initiatives. In the next three years, we will present to you in a quarterly newsletter, featured summaries of most recent research on these topics, and access to more in-depth discussions through the EU-VALUES network blog. We also will produce a series of webinars with the most distinguished scholars and professionals working in this field, as well as podcasts and short videos, to clarify recent debates and key issues, and to facilitate learning tools to support educational efforts. Finally, we plan also contributing to novel findings on some of the relevant challenges based on expert surveys, particularly focusing on foreign policy instruments to promote democratic values. We will also produce novel datasets with the most recent academic research in those fields. With all these schemes, we aim to foster a comprehensive dialogue, bringing together a multiplicity of perspectives to debate the most effective principles, strategies, and tools for advocating democratic values worldwide. To this end, we will promote exchanges and open discussions about the role of democratic values in foreign policy all over the world, and to encompass a variety of sensibilities about how democracy, rule of law, human rights can be highlighted and promoted in the context of states foreign policy making, international organizations strategies and transnational networks’ activities. In this first issue, we present you our EU-VALUES Network and the research collection on the general topic of our Network: Values and Democracy in EU´s foreign policy. Here we have selected besides the “classics”, also outstanding research on EU Values and Democracy, published in the last two years. Besides that, we also launch a call for papers for our first EU-VALUES conference on “Promoting Democracy and the Rule of Law – Global Perspectives” in Santiago de Chile - University of Chile, to be held on the 5th and 6th of December 2024.
